The Collective workshop has been held in Amsterdam in the last week of August since 1995 by Katie Duck. This workshop was set up to encourage dancers and musicians to use improvisation as a means to establish new ways to collaborate. The collective workshop has been held at the Orgelpark church organ concert hall in Amsterdam since 2007 with a focus on the church organ as an improvisation instrument.

The dancers are asked to be musicians in how they use their choreographic skills as they improvise. The musicians are asked to consider the performative options in space as they improvise. Both are placed in a position so that they create a space for music composition to be noticed by the presence of the dancers in a unique and powerful way.

This is an unusual opportunity for dancers to experience the grand levels of the four church organs in the Orgelpark concert hall and for the organ students and musicians studying with Jos van der Kooy to challenge the physicality and presence of their improvisations toward music compositions.

The workshop is five days, four hours per day with lessons and improvisation sessions. The schedule for this workshop divides the dancers and musicians for lessons in the first part of the day and then brings them together in the second period of the day for improvisation sessions. Additionally, there are open improvisation sessions held in the evenings of the Monday and Tuesday and a performance with Jos van der Kooy, Katie Duck, Vincent Cacalano and Alfredo Genovesi (MAGPIE) along with participants from the workshop, Thursday in the Orgelpark concert hall.

Cost for the workshop €150 / performance Thursday is free for the students in the workshop

Participants who attend the full five weeks of the 2012 summer course pay €100 for this workshop

SCHEDULE:

Monday to Thursday August 20-23

13:00-14:30 Music lessons upstairs with Jos van der Kooy. Dance lessons down stairs with Katie Duck, Vincent Cacalano and Alfredo Genovesi.

14:30-15:00 break

15:00-17:00 Improvisation sessions with feedback in the main hall with musicians, dancers and teachers together.
