Collective Workshop

August 23-27 Collective workshop Oregelpark

Dance teachers – Katie Duck and Vincent Cacalono

Music teacher – Jos van der Kooy

Music for the dance classes Alfredo Genovesi

The Collective workshop has been held in Amsterdam in the last week of August since 1995 by Katie Duck in response to post modern dance notions about liberating dancers from music. This workshop was set up to encourage dancers and musicians to use improvisation as a means to establish new ways to collaborate. The collective workshop has been held at the Orgelpark church organ concert hall in Amsterdam since 2007 with a focus on the church organ as an improvisation instrument.

The dancers are asked to be musicians in how they use their choreographic skills as they improvise. The musicians are asked to consider the performative options in space as they improvise. Both are placed in a  position so that they create a space for music composition to be noticed by the presence of the dancers in a unique and powerful way.

This is an unusual opportunity for dancers to experience the grand levels of the four church organs in the Orgelpark concert hall and for the organ students studying with Jos van der Kooy to challenge the physicality and presence of their improvisation music compositions.

The workshop is five days, four hours per day with lessons and improvisation sessions. The schedule for this workshop divides the dancers and musicians for lessons in the first part of the day and then brings them together in the second period of day for improvisation sessions. Additionally, there are improvisation sessions held in the evenings of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and a performance by Duck Projects and Jos van der Kooy with his organ students on the Thursday in the Orgelpark concert hall.

The collective workshop can accept 20 dancers and six musicians. Dancers go to Katie Duck to register. Musicians who wish to participate as an organist need to go to Jos van der Kooy . All other musicians need to go to Alfredo Genovesi. Cost 150 euros
