The improvisation summer course provides a performance platform under the title Freakatoni Witchy Weekends. These events provide a situation for the artists to use their real time art practice under the conditions of live public. Performances take place in the main space Studio 1 every Friday and Saturday, 20:00-22:00 through out the summer course. Freakatoni Witchy Weekends are two 30 to 40 minute sets with a break. An MC is selected each week to announce the events in any performance arts style they wish to use. Pieces can be ensembles or solos by musicians, dancers, performers, vocalists or a mix. Lighting is done by either Manuela or Miri in the first tow weeks and by Ellen Knops in the third week (festival). You do not set lights for your events. Manuela, Miri and Ellen will cooperate with your event in real time. In the third week of the summer course, Ellen will see each of your events separately in advance in a rehearsal on the Thursday evening so you can share with her your lighting ideas. The studio 1 sound system is available for all events. Participants in the summer course are encouraged to create 5 to 10 minute events in the first two weeks of the course and 20 minute events in the third week of the course. In the third week we promote the Freakatoni Witchy Weekend to Amsterdam as a Festival.
Every Monday and Tuesday, Izabel will book the weekend events during the lunch break. After the event is booked, Izabelawill set your rehearsal schedule. Katie, Manuela and/or Miri will talk to you about your event to advice and to design the order of events for that weekend. Izabelais the stage manager each evening for the events.
The aim is for the participants attending the full course program to discover groups within these activities to create events that are reflective of their individual backgrounds alongside the studies on the summer course. The summer course encourages the participants to present material that reflect the studies taking place in the workshops, or if the piece has been produced previously, that it is taken out of its original context and approached from a different angle. The setting of the of the Freakatoni Witchy weekends is designed to support the artists to take risk with their creative choices.
Signing up for an event is exclusive to those who are registered for the full course program only. Local and visiting artists book events in advance with Katie in a mix with summer course participants..
The course records the events each weekend and then places the videos on a web page for the participants to view and feedback. The course provides a promotional campaign gathering public out of local supporters and visitors in Amsterdam during the summer period.
The schedule of Freakatoni events will be placed on this page updated week to week.
