Sharon Smith

Dr. Sharon Smith - Over ten years I have collaborated with the performance art company Max Factory. Max Factory works between the languages of dance, visual art and theatre and has created installation and performance for diverse venues, contexts and sites. Since 1996 I have worked with the Amsterdam based improvisation company MAGPIE.  Magpie wrote their performances in real time. I gained a PhD from Nottingham Trent University in 2003. The paper is called Something in the way She moves: Politics of Presence in the Performance Act. The research articulates a performance presence that considers self as ‘part-of’ and works against the ’self’ as separate/singular. It is written through Irigagary, Barthes and the performance practice of Max Factory and Magpie Between 2003 and 2006 I wrote, implemented and managed a degree course in dance at Liverpool Hope University as well as writing and running courses in contemporary performance practice. I have been performing with magpie since 1996. Working in Austria, Germany, Holland, Spain, Russia, Turkey, Italy and America. As well as Magpies regular members (Vincent Cacialano, Michael Schumacher, Eileen Standley, Martin Sonderkamp, Mary Oliver, Michael Vatcher, Michael Moore) I have improvised with numerous dancers and musicians including Nancy Stark Smith, Meg Stewart, Amanda Miller, Johnathan Burrows, David Zambrano, Alex McGuire…
